![]() It's happening. What began as a glimmer of an idea 5 years ago is becoming a reality this summer. Coach Leaf has wanted to take a team to compete internationally for years and this year, the stars seemed to align for such an undertaking in the club. A trip of this kind requires a LOT of planning, not to mention funds. There are tons of details to consider, questions to ask, decisions to be made that without a team of parents and players ready to jump in, would be daunting and seemingly impossible. We are lucky. Why South Africa? It's probably not the first country that comes to mind when one thinks of competing internationally. Europe tends to be a popular place to compete with the Netherlands relatively easy to get to. But field hockey in South Africa is high level where lots of adults and youths play. And for many, it's a country that evokes a sense of real adventure and rich culture. Luckily for us, the prestigious Cape Town International Field Hockey Tournament is happening at the time we planned to be there. We will have the rare opportunity to face off against some of the best youth teams from Africa and Europe. How awesome! We will definitely venture out after the tournament to see many of the well-known sites such as Table Mountain (7 Wonders of Nature), Robben Island (a World Heritage site), Langa Township, and much more. Sightseeing will culminate in an unforgettable stay at the Kariega Game Reserve for close encounters with African wildlife. We know how lucky we all are to be able to travel across the world for such an amazing experience, so much so, that we felt that we needed to give back to the local community in some way. Thus, we arranged to volunteer at a local children's and women's shelter called Where Rainbows Meet while also bringing donations. To make this trip affordable for all of our players, we've begun fundraising to help offset expenses. We set up a GoFundMe campaign (#IMPACTCapeTown), hoping we can garner support from far and wide. Locally, we intend to do several smaller events such as a GotSneakers campaign, DNO's (Dinner Nights Out), curb painting, bake sales, and whatever other creative ideas our players come up with. This promises to be a transformative experience for everyone involved and we hope you can support us.
